Background

Central corneal injuries caused by non-sterile foreign bodies represent a therapeutic challenge due to the threat to visual acuity with a simultaneous threat of microbial infection [1]. Immediate steroid therapy can prevent dense corneal scarring but reduces the immune response to suspected pathogens [2], [3], [4]. We report a case of a corneal injury that was treated with steroids from initial presentation despite a high likelihood of microbial contamination.
