Significance

The solution-phase synthesis of a cyclo[48]carbon is accomplished for the first time by employing the supramolecular stabilization strategy. Namely, a catenane motif is used to protect a highly reactive, large cyclopolyalkyne.


Comment

In the obtained [4]catenane structure the cyclo[48]carbon ring is threaded through three smaller macrocycles, which offer effective shielding and protection in spite of the dynamic motion and incomplete encapsulation.
