Keywords
diborencine macrocycles - one-electron σ-bond - electron encapsulation - sp3 hybridized boron
Significance
Due to the delocalization tendency of electrons, encapsulation of a single electron within a small molecular cavity is challenging. This work successfully achieves a single-electron B–B σ-bond integrated into a macrocyclic scaffold, and its unique reactivity is characterized.
Comment
Upon reduction of a ten-membered diborencine macrocycle with one equivalent potassium, an anionic radical featuring a one-electron σ-bond between two boron atoms is produced. It is characterized by way of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
