Significance

Borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, 4a-e were synthesized in moderate yields from 5-substituted 2-furaldehydes. Dyes 4a-e have large absorption coefficients, sharp absorption and emission bands and are highly fluorescent. Dyes with a wide range of absorption (542-723 nm) and emission (549-738 nm) maxima could be accessed by changing the 5-aryl substituent of the starting 2-furaldehyde.
