Significance

Anthecularin inhibits two key enzymes in the plasmodium fatty acid synthase complex and hence possesses weak antimalarial activity. The key step in the synthesis depicted is an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the oxidopyrylium ion I.
