Significance

The preparation of novel oxindoles via Heck-reduction-cyclization reaction (HRC) of 2-(2-nitrophenyl)acrylates 1 and aryl diazonium salts 2 was examined with various supported Pd catalysts, where in situ generated Pd/C was identified as the best catalyst (Scheme). Although the Pd/C catalyst was not recyclable for the sequential HRC reactions, the recovered catalyst still exhibited high catalytic activity for the reduction (eqs. 1-3).
