Significance

An amphiphilic resin-dispersion of nanoparticles of platinum (ARP-Pt) was applied to the aerobic oxidation of variety alcohols in water. Thus, the complexation of commercially available PS-PEG-NH2 1 and Zeise’s salt 2 gave PS-PEG resin-supported Pt complex 3, which was reduced with benzyl alcohol to afford ARP-Pt 4. Aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol 5 was carried out in water with ARP-Pt to give benzoic acid 6 in 99% yield. Catalyst 4 was recovered and reused four times without any loss of catalytic activity.
