Significance

Naphthofuran 1 was synthesized in moderate yields from a bis(acetal). 1 was found to be stable and could be stored for several months under cool and dark conditions. A subsequent two-fold Diels-Alder reaction with the tethered bis(maleimide) 2 yielded the stable cyclophane 3.
