Significance

The authors report the synthesis and properties of a pyridinium-barbiturate-betaine dye (3). After reacting diethylphenyl malonate and N-methyl urea they perform a nitration leading to 2. The following reaction with potassium formate followed by 2,4,6-triphenylpyrilium tetrafluoroborate yields the desired dye 3.
