Significance

The authors had previously made bearings by silver and mercury ion assembly where the two outer rings underwent correlated motion. By using the Pt₂ spacers, the two outer most rings in Pt₆Ag_6-L₂L′₂ ^+¹² can now move independently and properly emulate a macroscopic double ball bearing.
