The topic of contraception was last addressed in Seminars in Reproductive Medicine in Volume 19, Number 4, 2001. Since that time further new techniques have been developed and new products have become available. Fertility control remains an important issue due to the continual world population growth, particularly in undeveloped countries. Dr. Katherine O'Connell White has agreed to serve as guest editor for this issue entitled “Update on Contraception.”
Dr. White attended Duke University and graduated with a B.S. in 1994. She received her medical degree from UMDNJ—New Jersey Medical School in 1998. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Tufts University School of Medicine—Baystate Medical Center in 2002. She then completed a fellowship in family planning at Columbia University and subsequently joined the faculty as an assistant clinical professor of OB/GYN. She recently joined the faculty at Baystate Medical Center, where she is the Family Planning Section Head in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Since the end of her fellowship, Dr. White has been active in teaching and research in addition to her clinical practice. She has helped train fellows, residents, and medical students in all aspects of family planning and has won numerous teaching awards. She conducts research in contraceptive continuation and pregnancy termination techniques and has authored >20 scientific publications and abstracts. Dr. White is also the coauthor of Fast Facts: Contraception.
