Synthesis of β-Amino Carbonyls with a Biomaterial-Supported Organocatalyst

Significance
Biomaterial-supported organocatalyst 1 was synthesized by mixing expanded corn starch and chlorosulfonic acid followed by treatment with pyridine (eq. 1). Catalyst 1 promoted the aza-Michael addition of amines 2 to electron-deficient alkenes 3 to give the corresponding β-amino carbonyls 4 in up to 96% yield (27 examples, eq. 2).
