Significance

A novel encapsulated Pt nanoparticle catalyst in an organosilica matrix that was prepared from methyltriethoxysilane by a sol-gel route was developed. In the presence of the catalyst, SiliaCat Pt0, the chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes proceeded with 1 bar H2 at room temperature to give the corresponding aniline derivatives. The chemoselective reduction of 1-nitropyrene, 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid, chloro- and bromo-substituted nitrobenzenes, arylcarbonyl derivatives, and 6-nitroquinoline was presented.
