Summary

An increasing number of obese patients represent a specific challenge for surgeons. Wound healing disorders are frequent among obese patients resulting in major morbidity. Subsequently, increasing costs for the health system arise caused by revision procedures, frequent change of dressings and prolonged hospital stays. On the other hand, a delayed return to work und costs for nursery burden the social system. This review intends to highlight the relationships between obesity and acute, respectively postsurgical, wound healing disorders. Additionally, potential preventive strategies are depicted and evaluated.
