Mit der Innocenti-Deklaration wurde 1990 global das ausschließliche Stillen für 4–6 Monate empfohlen, die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) folgte mit der Empfehlung für 6 Monate ausschließliches Stillen im Jahr 2001. Im Themenschwerpunkt des Lancet rund um das Thema Stillen konstatiert die Arbeitsgruppe um Nigel C. Rollins als Vertreter der WHO eine gewisse Müdigkeit bei Initiativen zur Unterstützung des Stillens.
