Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America
Introduction to DPSG-NA
The Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America (DPSG-NA) was born out of a simple yet urgent recognition: pregnant women with diabetes deserve more dedicated science, collaboration, and advocacy. In the mid-1990s, as the prevalence of type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes mellitus was rising, a handful of maternal–fetal medicine specialists realized that the field lacked a unifying forum to address the complex challenges of these high-risk pregnancies. Inspired by the European Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group, founded in 1969, three visionaries—Drs. Oded Langer, Menachem Miodovnik, and E. Albert Reece—resolved to bring together their colleagues in North America. Their efforts culminated in 1997 with the establishment of DPSG-NA, and in 1998, the inaugural meeting was held in San Antonio, Texas.
From those beginnings, with an audience of roughly 60 attendees, DPSG-NA has grown into a robust, multidisciplinary community, convening hundreds of participants at biennial meetings around the United States. The group's mission has remained constant: to catalyze research, influence policy, and improve clinical practice in order to optimize outcomes for pregnant women with diabetes and their children.
