ABSTRACT

This article describes a multidisciplinary clinical protocol designed to address the audiologic, neurodevelopmental, and family support needs of infants and young children with auditory neuropathy at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary in this population because of the variable audiometric results and uncertain audiologic prognosis, a potential history of major neonatal illness with a high risk of neurodevelopmental delays, and the resulting parental stress. The protocol ensures consistency of recommendations and of clinical data across a large audiology staff. In addition, the protocol provides developmental monitoring and intervention by referral as necessary. Finally, the protocol addresses the mental health needs of families who face this diagnosis. This article also briefly describes our clinical experience to date with children diagnosed with auditory neuropathy.
