Significance
The azaphilones do not appear to have significant biological activity. The pyronoquinone chromophore is a key feature of some plant pigments. The biomimetic synthesis of S-15183a outlined above is only the second asymmetric synthesis of the quaternary center in the azaphilones, the previous synthesis being accomplished by Sorensen and co-workers (L. M. Stark, K. Pekari, E. J. Sorensen Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 2004, 101, 12064-12066).
