Significance

An odorless synthesis of aldehydes 5 from a thioacetal 2 and a Merrifield resin 1 was demonstrated. Thus, polymeric 1,3-dithiane reagent 3 was prepared from chloromethylated polystyrene 1 with thioacetal 2 in 97-98%. An alkylation followed by removal of the polymer supports afforded 5 in moderate yields.
