Significance

Upon irradiation of the bent-shaped mesogen with circular polarized light (CPL) in resonance with the azo group absorption, uniform chiral liquid crystalline phase domains of a given handedness are reversibly obtained. CPL stimulation achieves very large ee values (up to ca. 100%) of either enantiomer by this nucleated photoresolution.
