Significance

A polymeric DABCO-bromine complex for oxidation of secondary alcohols has been developed. The DABCO-bromine complex was prepared from Br₂ and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) in CCl₄. The oxidation of secondary alcohols was carried out in biphasic CH₂Cl₂-H₂O in the presence of the polymeric DABCO-bromine complex to give the corresponding ketones in 84-97% yield (7 examples). The DABCO-bromine complex is selective for the oxidation of secondary alcohols over primary alcohols.
