Significance

A facile and versatile method for the trimethylsilylation of alcohols by using sulfonic acid functionalized silica catalyst 1 was developed. Thus, the trimethylsilylation of benzyl alcohol was carried out with 1 and hexamethyldisilazane to give benzyl trimethylsilyl ether in 99% yield. Catalyst 1 was reused without loss of catalytic activity (>90%, 1st-21st cycle). The trimethylsilylation of various alcohols by using 1 was also demonstrated (26 examples, 81-100% yields). Representative products are shown in the scheme.
