Significance

The oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by polymer-incarcerated ruthenium (PI Ru) was developed. Thus, the PI Ru catalyst was prepared from copolymer P 1 and RuCl3×nH2O in six steps (eq. 1). The oxidation of benzylic alcohols and cinnamyl alcohol with molecular oxygen was carried out in the presence of PI Ru catalyst and TEMPO to give the corresponding aldehydes in 91-99% yield (eq. 2). Under similar reaction conditions, 1-decanol and adamantyl alcohol were oxidized to decanal and adamantanone in the presence of K2CO3 in 70% and 93% yield, respectively.
