Significance

Olefin metathesis has become an extremely important tool in various fields of synthetic organic chemistry. Ruthenium carbene complexes are the most important class of the currently used metathesis catalysts due to their stability and functional group tolerance. However, they are not sufficiently effective for the formation of tetrasubstituted double bonds. This work describes the preparation and properties of a new, much more active Ru catalyst, working well also in cases of tetrasubstituted double bonds.
