Significance

A straightforward method for the synthesis of substituted indazoles and related hetero­cycles (Y = N) by a Cu-catalyzed coupling of 2-haloaryl ketones or 2-halobenzoic acids with hydrazines is described. 2-Haloaryl ketones give better yields than 2-halobenzoic acids which proceed poorly (16-26%). The functional group tolerance and scope of substrates were not well investigated.
