Significance

A sol-gel-encapsulated alcohol dehydrogenase (W110A TeSADH) was used for enantioselective reduction of hydrophobic ketones in organic solvents. Thus, the reaction of aliphatic ketones was performed with xerogel-encapsulated W110A TeSADH/NADH+ in 2-propanol and hexane to give the corresponding S-secondary alcohols in 61-99% yield with 69-99% ee (6 examples). The authors mentioned that this is the first report of a preparative scale asymmetric reduction by a xerogel-encapsulated ADH in pure organic solvent media.
