Significance

The authors demonstrate how boronic esters can be used to effect spontaneous structural assembly of a host molecule in response to a guest molecule. Both forms of the host-guest complex precipitate from solution under their respective conditions in nearly quantitative yields. Further, the equilibration between both forms of the host can be ‘frozen’ and used to trap other guests.
