Significance

The cross-coupling reaction of nitrogen heterocycles (imidazole, pyrrole, benzimidazole, pyrazole, indole) with various activated chloro- and fluoroarenes was achieved by using nanocrystalline CuO as catalyst. The reactions were carried out in the presence of 10 mol% of nano-CuO and K2CO3 as a base in DMF to give the corresponding N-arylated products in 76-94% yield. The nano-CuO catalyst was recovered by simple centrifugation-decantation and reused five times for N-arylation of imidazole with 4-chlorobenzonitrile.
