Significance

The group of Buchwald developed an extremely efficient class of ligands for the Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions. They are also suitable for the conversion of a broad variety of aryl chlorides into the corresponding boronic esters. For the first time, the formation of biaryls can be performed in one pot starting from two different aryl or hetaryl chlorides, including the electron-rich and sterically hindered ones. Catalyst loadings as low as 0.05 mol% are sufficient.
