Significance
The authors report the synthesis of the donor-acceptor systems 3 and 4 that exhibit strong solid and liquid fluorescence as well as large Stokes shifts. They were prepared by condensation of the anhydride 1 and quinaldine in the presence of zinc chloride. The obtained compound 2 was then treated with boron trifluoride etherate, yielding a mixture of 3 and 4. The ratio of the products (3 to 4) varied from 2:1 (toluene, 60 °C) to 1:2 (dichloromethane, room temperature).
