Significance

Norbadione A is a mushroom pigment and an antioxidant. Following the Chernobyl disaster it was found that norbadione A forms complexes with cesium 137 causing its retention and concentration in edible mushrooms (W. Steglich Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 1989, 28, 453). The synthesis depicted is based on the use of a double Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to join the the pulvinic acid derivative I to the naphtholactone H.
