Significance

Divergent approaches to the synthesis of dendrimers require very efficient reactions to achieve well-defined macromolecules. The thiol-ene reaction of thiols and allyl moieties represents a useful ‘click’ reaction for dendrimer synthesis as it provides quantitative yields and regioselectivity, can be conducted in the absence of solvents or in benign solvents, is compatible with water and oxygen, does not require a metal reagent, is photoinitiated, and yields products that can be purified by simple precipitation.
