Preparation of Nitrones by Hydrogenation of 2-(2-Nitro-1-phenylethyl)cyclohexanones

A practical and simple synthetic strategy for the synthesis of nitrones have been developed. Hydrogenation of 2-(2-nitro-1-phenylethyl)cyclohexanone by Pd/C afforded the corresponding nitrones in good to high and in high diastereoselectively. The starting materials, 2-(2-nitro-1-phenylethyl)cyclohexanones were easily prepared by the reaction of substituted cyclohexanones and nitroalkenes in the presence of 10 mol% of pyrrolidine.
