Summary

Endoscopic biopsies are carried out under vision during endoscopic examination. It allows in all parts of the stomach a histologic diagnosis of lesions which cannot be grossly identified. This method is of great value in the diagnosis of early cancer of the stomach and thus should be carried out in patients with ulcer of the stomach, polyps and polypoid lesions of the gastric mucosa. By this method hyperplasia of the mucosa can be recognized also. Endoscopic biopsy permits an exact differentiation between gastritis of the pyloric gland area and fundalgastritis. The incidence of bleeding is extremely low. Our experience represents the results of more than 3000 endoscopic biopsies in more than 1000 subjects.
