In this issue of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine, we again update the state of the art for the pathophysiology and treatment of uterine leiomyomas, which was last addressed in 2004 (volume 22, number 2). We were fortunate to recruit Dr. William H. Catherino to serve as guest editor.

Dr. Catherino graduated from the University of Michigan and then earned his medical degree and a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Catherino is currently a tenured associate professor and head of the Research Department for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the associate program director for the Combined Federal Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the NIH, and the training director for the Uniformed Services University Center for Health Disparities.

He is recognized nationally and internationally as an outstanding clinician, researcher, and educator in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Catherino possesses great expertise in the clinical management of infertility patients and is highly skilled in the newest assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization and operative laparoscopy. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

A bench-to-bedside researcher and winner of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award, Dr. Catherino conducts pioneering laboratory research as well as clinical trials to introduce new medications to the field of uterine fibroids. He has written numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts, trained many students, and received more than $1 million in research funding. Dr. Catherino is a leader in the field of uterine leiomyomas, serving as chair of the Fibroid Special Interest Group and chair of the Leiomyoma Post-Graduate Course. He also directs policy as a member of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) Practice Committee. Finally, he is a permanent member of the editorial advisory board of the ASRM's journal, Fertility and Sterility.

Dr. Catherino has recruited an outstanding group of scientists and clinicians to bring the readers of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine an update on this important disorder affecting millions of women.
