I Do It My Way: Alternative Approaches in Multidisciplinary Management of GI Diseases

In some ways our approach to this issue was like a naive science experiment. Since we shared a satisfying professional collaboration at our prior jobs where we were part of a dynamic multidisciplinary group that included interventional radiologists and advanced endoscopists, when this opportunity to serve as co-guest editors was given to us, we started contemplating ways to revive our prior experience.

Our vision was to choose five topics that have high clinical impact, where both our specialties were pushing the limits of innovation, technology, tools, and skills and wherein management approach may be in the eye of the beholder. We solicited and helped create five pairs of interventional radiology and advanced endoscopy teams, and then gave them complete creative freedom to work on their chosen topic. The topics included are management of gastric varices, enteral access, gallbladder drainage, liver biopsy and portal venous pressure measurements, and management of pancreatitis with walled-off necrosis. We also asked the authors to consider writing as they would debate each other. Clinical case examples were requested to illustrate the scenarios where management approaches could be variable. The structure and style of the individual articles in this issue are bit different from each other by design. Two pairs chose to combine their efforts into one article and the remainder wrote their own.

Structure, regimen, guidelines, and protocols are what we live by these days as physicians and our hope was to let loose a bit, be creative and collaborative, and pursue a healthy competition in the process. Our hope is for interventional radiologists and advanced endoscopists to push the limits of minimally invasive patient care by building a stronger collaboration with each other in their respective institutes.

We would like to thank all the authors for their collaborative efforts and expertise to bring this issue to life. We would finally like to thank Thieme and Dr. Baljendra Kapoor for the opportunity to guest edit this issue. Inspired by words of Frank Sinatra we share with you our issue titled “I Do It My Way: Alternative Approaches in Multidisciplinary Management of GI Diseases.”
