Abstract

Two new sequiterpene lactones m.p. 140–142° C, (α)20 D 128° and m.p. 134–135° C, (α)25 D 146.8° were isolated from the light–petroleum extract of Varthemia. candicans. Both have the same formula, C15H20O3, and exhibit similar spectroscopic (UV, IR and NMR) characters. They were found to have the structure of an γ–lactone with an exocyclic méthylène group in addition to a ketonic group in a cyclopentanone ring. A third lactone m.p. 80–83° C, (α)18 D 30.8° was also isolated from the same extract. It was found to have an alcoholic group. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of these lactones against some microorganisms was tested.
