Abstract

On the basis of chemical evidence and spectroscopic data the alkaloids of Centaurium spicatum are shown to be of both the pyridine type (e. g. gentianine) and the series of amides derived from the secoiridoid glucoside swertiamarin, which is also shown to be present. In addition the structures are elucidated of the alkaloid spicatine and the glycoside kantaurin which had previously been only partially characterised but unidentified.
