Abstract

In an attempt to prove the structure of h annin, 1–ethyl-β-carboline was synthesised. Its chemical characteristists agree with those found in literature. Some of its pharmacological properties were studied because of the similarity between its structure and that of harmine, an antidepressant mono-amine oxidase inhibitor.

1–ethyl-β-carboline antagonises the agonist action of acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin and barium chloride on the guinea-pig ileum. It also antagonises the effect of exogeneous and endogenous catecholamines. And unlike harmine, it is a CNS depressant with a hypotensive effect.
