Abstract

A new pigment having naphthaquinone structure was isolated from the roots of Alkanna tinctoria. The UV, IR, NMR, and MASS spectra were recorded and the compound was characterized as the 3–methyl–3–acetoxy-butanoic ester of alkannin (β-acetoxy-isovaleric ester of alkannin).
