Abstract

Seven Elaeocarpus species of Indian origin have been surveyed for alkaloids, flavonoids and other phenolic constituents in their leaves. The results reveal that an Elaeocarpus species almost invariably contains either myricetin or gallic acid. Four out of seven species have been found to contain mearnsetin, a rare methyl ether of myricetin. E. ganitrus is distinctive for being one out of the seven species to contain alkaloids.
