Abstract

Catechins and oligomeric proanthocyanidins could be identified in tissue and suspension cultures of Crataegus monogyna Jacq., C. oxyacantha L. and Ginkgo biloba L. In contrast to the leaves of the intact plants the cultures showed proanthocyanidins with a lower degree of polymerization, mainly in the group of the dimeric to the hexameric compounds.

The production of oligomeric procyanidins in callus cultures of Crataegus monogyna needs light and varies with different plant hormones.

Cinnamic acids, chlorogenic acid and benzoic acids, biogenetically related to the flavonoids, were found in callus cultures of Crataegus monogyna.
