Abstract

Samples of leaf, stem and root of some Tylophora species from Sri Lanka have been screened for their alkaloids. The extracts have been assessed for their alkaloid content and have been examined by TLC. The presence of tylophorinine and three unknown alkaloids is indicated in T. cordifolia and tylophorinine, tylophorine and four unknown alkaloids in T. flava. These two species have not previously been investigated. Eight different samples of T. asthmatica have similarly been screened and tylophorinine shown to be the major alkaloid in contrast to Indian T. asthmatica in which tylophorine is the major alkaloid. Tylophorinine, tylophorine and tylophorinidine have been isolated from one batch of Sri Lankan T. asthmatica. The NMR spectrum of tylophorinine is discussed and the preferred conformation of this alkaloid is proposed.
