Abstract

Three tetraoxygenated xanthones (1–hydroxy–3,7,8–trimethoxyxanthone, 1,7–dihydroxy–3,8–dimethoxyxanthone and 1,8–dihydroxy–3,7–dimethoxyxanthone) and stverosid were isolated from the leaves of Anthocleista vogelii Planch. (Loganiaceae) collected from Zaire.

These xanthones were found for the first time in the genus Anthocleista. Medicinal properties ascribed to the plant were probably due to a synergic activity of xanthones and seco-iridoid constituents.
