Abstract

Phytochemical screening indicated that all the three species of Clarkia investigated, contained sterols, flavonoids and tannins but no alkaloids or anthraquinones were found in detectable quantity.

Fraction A (petroleum ether extract) yielded β–sitosterol. Analysis by paper chromatography of fraction B indicated a similar flavonoid pattern in all the three species studied, and the presence of at least 13 flavonoids. Column chromatographic analysis of fraction B resulted in the isolation of quercitrin.
