Abstract

The galactomannan of the seeds of Cassia fistula is composed of 77.14 % D–man–nose and 22.86 % D–galactose. The methylated galactomannan on hydrolysis gives 2,3,4,6–tetra–O–methyl–D–galactose (8 mole prop.), 2,3,6–tri–O–methyl–D–mannose (15 mole prop.) 2,3–di–O–methyl–D–mannose (10 mole prop.) and a small amount (2 mole prop.) of 2,3,4,6–tetra–O–methyl–D–mannose. The structural significance of these findings and those from periodate oxidation of the galactomannan is discussed.
