Abstract

The seeds of Ipomoea fistulosa (I. carnea) have been found to contain a phytosterolin, C35H60O6, m. p. 284–286°. Acid hydrolysis of the compound yielded glucose and β–sitosterol, the identity of which was confirmed by mixed melting point determination and superimposition of infra–red spectra over an authentic sample. Methylation, periodate oxidation, enzymic hydrolysis and the positive optical rotations of the compound and its methyl and acetyl derivatives have shown the phytosterolin to be O–α–D–glucopyranoside of β–sitosterol.
