SEPARATION OF A CARDIAC GLYCOSIDE FROM PENSTEMON GRANDIFLORUS

Abstract

A paper Chromatographie study of the different plant parts of Penstemon grandiflorus revealed the presence of three glycosides. This was confirmed by chemical means. Isolation of a crystalline glycoside was achieved on a partition silica gel column using 0.5 % methanol in ethyl acetate saturated with water as a developer. Physico–chemical analysis showed that the isolated glycoside has an unsaturated butadienolide lactone ring, a steroid nucleus and a sugar portion of glucose and digitoxose. The melting point, ultraviolet and infrared spectra were recorded.
