SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE PROPAGATION OF DIOSCOREA BELIZENSIS LUNDELL AND OTHER STEROID–YIELDING YAMS

Summary

Dioscorea belizensis Lund ell, a diosgenin–yielding wild plant, from British Honduras, produces neither seed nor bulbils. A procedure is described for its propagation by means of leaf cuttings to select high yielding strains. This method was superior to that of using tuber cuttings, but was not applicable to two other useful diosgenin–yielding wild species, D. deltoidea Wall, from India and D. sylvatica Ecklon from South Africa. These two species are best propagated from seed; artificial pollination may be used to select their stock.

Zusammenfassung

Die Diosgenin–haltige Dioscorea belizensis aus Br. Honduras trägt weder Samen noch Bulbillen. Zur Vermehrung ertragreicher Rassen wird eine Methode zur Vermehrung durch Blattstecklinge beschrieben. Sie ist ergiebiger als die Benutzung von Knollen. Bei den südafrikanischen Arten D. deltoidea und D. sylvatica ist sie nicht anwendbar. Diese Arten lassen sich durch Samen vermehren.
