Significance

The authors report an inexpensive copper-catalyzed system for direct hydroxylation of aryl halides (iodides and bromides) using an alkali metal base as the nucleophile. The reaction tolerates a broad number of functional groups and proceeds at relatively low temperature (110-120 ˚C). Aryl bromides react smoothly in the presence of sodium iodide.
